"Scouting brings out the best in each of us. Live what you've learned and will continue to learn. Help others to hike the trails, to keep steadfast in the paths of truth, of honor, of duty, that all of you can soar together on eagles' wings. You are part of a mighty army of youth, even a royal army, and every organization, to be successful, has an honored tradition to uphold. May you uphold Scouting's tradition, for it can be as a lighthouse beacon in the world of stormy seas, it can be a motivation to prepare for your role in life, it can be a yardstick against which you measure your accomplishments." ~President Thomas S. Monson--2010

Labor Day and a Campout

This is just a reminder of a couple of upcoming activities for our boys.  September 3rd is Labor Day, and as such we will be delivering and picking up flags.  Please remember that this service is what pays for our troop to be able to attend summer camp so we are expecting everyone to participate.  During our last Court of Honor over 100 merit badges and around 20 rank advancements were awarded.  The vast majority of merit badges were a direct result of attending scout camp, and a number of requirements for rank advancement were also met while at camp so please come and do your part.

This weekend we will be camping, again.  This time it will be car camping--so no significant hiking will take place.  Scouts on Wednesday will focus on preparing for this camping trip.  You won't want to miss this one!

Sunday, August 26, 2012

Upcoming Activities

We are having a combined activity on Wednesday so please arrive at the church at 7pm.

September 3rd is Labor Day.  We will be delivering flags that morning and picking them up in the evening.  Please come and do your part.

It is also time for people to renew their flag subscription.  You will be hearing more about this in the upcoming weeks.

We are also in need of blog permission slip forms.  If your parent has not completed one we cannot post any pictures on the blog so please help us get this taken care of.

Camping and Court of Honor

This is looking like it will be another busy week for our scouts.  On Friday we will be going camping, which means that on Wednesday we will be going over camp preparation.  The key to this one is simple: pack light--and bring plenty of water because we're hiking in and hiking out.

On Sunday we are having a Court of Honor.  We all need to be there on time and in uniform.  The awards list for this one is going to be huge so bring your parents and come and receive the fruits of your labors.

One last tid bit.  We like to post pictures of what our troop is doing, however we cannot do this without parental permission forms being turned in.  If you haven't turned yours in please check in with me.

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Eagle Scout Court of Honor

This Saturday there will be an Eagle Scout Court of Honor at the church that starts at 7pm.  We are being asked to arrive at around 6pm to practice and then participate in the flag ceremony.  This will be discussed at scouts on Wednesday.  See you all then.

Sunday, August 12, 2012

Special Scouts Meeting

First off, we will be meeting as normal on Wednesday at 6:45pm at the church for our weekly scout meeting.

The purpose of this post is to let you know that we will be having an extra scout meeting this week on Thursday at 4:00pm at Bro. Vincent's home.  Here is the list of those who need to come to this meeting: Cedric, Dylan, Hayden, Jacob T., Jordan, Michael V., and Zach F..  Kye, I haven't seen your scout records yet but I'm assuming that you need to be there as well.  During this meeting we will be passing off a few requirements for first and second class.  If your name is on this list it is because you stand in need of at least one of these requirements, if not all three.  For some of you this will mean the difference between rank advancement at this court of honor and no rank advancement until the next court of honor.

I also wanted to put out yet another reminder for those of you who have yet to do some of the requirements that need to be done on your own.  First of all, for those of you who haven't passed off second class requirement 10 (that's the earn and save money one), please earn and save money.  If you have questions about it please let one of your leaders know.  This requirement often holds people back, please don't let it do this to you.  The second requirement that tends to hold people up is first class requirement 10.  In order to accomplish this you need to tell a young man who is old enough to join about our troop, some of its activities, and invite them to come and join.  Again, if you have any questions about it please let one of your leaders know.

It is quite possible that as many as 10 of you can have rank advancements at this upcoming court of honor.  10!  That's awesome!  And some of you may be eligible for more than one rank advancement.  We're on pace for an amazing court of honor.  Push yourself this week and see how much you can accomplish.

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

Upcoming Court of Honor

We have an upcoming court of honor (26th of this month at 7pm).  Now would be a good time to take a look at where you are at to determine what you need to do to get your next rank advancement.  I will be seeking out those who come to mutual tonight to discuss this.  If you have questions about advancement please let me know asap.

Flags, Flag Ceremony, and Scout Camp

We will be having an abreviated scout meeting tomorrow (Monday, July 1st) at 4:00pm.  The plan is to meet at the church for 30 minutes to prepare for the flag ceremony that we will be performing on the 4th of July at the ward's breakfast.

Speaking of July 4th, we have flags that will need to be delivered.  As a reminder, this is what was able to pay for our awesome experience at Camp Raymond so make sure that you participate!  We are meeting at Brother Vincent's house at 5:50am to take care of this.  We will discuss our evening pick-up time on Wednesday.

Just a word on scout camp.  We had an awesome experience and would like to share some pictures and stories, but we do not have everyone's blog persmission slip so we cannot post any pictures yet.  Please get this turned in asap!

As always, if you have any questions please let us know.

Tonight will be our final night to prepare for scout camp.  Please come so that you so that you can get the information that you need which will allow you to show up Monday morning on time and prepared to have a successful week.  Our departure date of June 25th is literally around the corner so make sure that you are prepared to leave.

As a final reminder, we are in need of you health forms (parts A, B, and C).  If you have any questions or concerns about this please let either myself, Brother Moore, or Brother Ray know so that we can help you to take care of it.  Again, your boy cannot participate at scout camp without these forms.

Summer Camp Health Form

Summer camp at Camp Raymond is now less than one month away.  It is essential that you get your Health forms completed by your health care provider asap.  You will not be able to attend summer camp without doing this.  If you lost the form that you were sent home with you can print off another copy by clicking on the summer camp 2012 tab that is above the quote from Pres. Monson.  From there scroll down to item C and click on the "click here" link.  Please do not wait to get this form filled out and turned in to Brother Ray, Brother Moore, or myself.  If you have any questions please let one of us know.

This week at scouts we will start working towards planning our camp.  The main topic that we will focus on will be planning which merit badges you will work on while at camp.  Please come prepared to discuss this.  Know which merit badges that you have completed, and which merit badges that you are in need of.  If you would like to know which merit badges that Camp Raymond offers you can find out by simply clicking on the summer camp 2012 tab.  Scroll down to part B and click on the "click here" link.  This will give you all of the information that you need (and more) about the camp.  From there the table of contents will direct you to where you need to look.  Again, if you have any questions please let one of us know.

One last thing that is completely unrelated to summer camp.  How are you doing on your homework?  Bring it to scouts on Wednesday so that we can check on your progress.  If you don't know what I'm referring to, please bring this to my attention at scouts so that we can go over it again.

Camping and Homework

Last Wednesday for scouts we met and started a three month homework project.  The goal of this project is to complete some of the most difficult requirements for three time consuming merit badges that are required to earn the Eagle Scout award.  The young men are to use the packet that we sent home to track their chores, personal fitness program, and financial record.  This is to be updated by the young man daily.  --Young men, you need to make sure that you have discussed this project with your parents.  They need to be aware of what you are doing with regards to these records (that is one of the requirements).  Make sure that you bring your records with you to scouts every week so that we can check on your progress.

We are camping this weekend, May 11th-12th.  We will be camping by the vehicles so don't worry about packing light, however we will be doing some hiking the following day using only "day packs."  Most of your gear will be left behind with the cars while we hike.  Make sure that you arrive at scouts on-time and in uniform.  We will be covering the details at that time.

2. Your completed homework assignment
3. Scout uniform
4. Chair

Wilderness Survival Campout

As part of the Wilderness Survival merit badge, the boys had to build shelters and spend one night in them.  Let's see how they did.
Three of the boys (Cedric, Riggs, and Spencer) decided to build there shelter together.
Sure seems like there's an awful lot of light coming through their roof.  Thank goodness for their sake that it didn't rain!
The other two boys (Josh and Isaac) built a shelter that appeared like it would be a little more effective at protecting them from the elements.
As you can see from the picture above, we have a couple of happy guys who stayed warm and slept comfortably.  Nice job guys!
This is a picture of Brother Ray's shelter.  He said that he slept comfortably.

If you're looking for a picture of the other two leader's shelters, just imagine something that looked like a tent with a couple of propane heaters in it.  If you can imagine something like that, then you're pretty close to visualizing what their shelter looked like.
Bacon cheese quesadilla's were on the menu for breakfast.
A couple of tuckered out young men on the ride home.

Campout Departure Time

Please arrive at 2:45pm on Friday so that we can depart on-time for our campout.  Remember to bring your food assignments, and also remember your assignments for the fire side.  You also need to make sure to bring your wilderness survival kit with you, because those are the supplies from which you will be making your shelter.  If you cannot make it or have any questions please feel free to contact myself, Brother Moore, or Brother Ray.

Wilderness Survival Camporee

 February 2012 Wilderness Survival Camporee.
Dinner preparation.  Everybody pitches in.
The beginnings of a dutch oven stew, which turned out pretty tasty.
Group picture in front of the Order of the Arrow's tepee.
The boys eating their ash cakes that were made from corn meal.  The cakes are then placed on a hot rock, and then covered with ash for 3-5 minutes.
The boys patiently waiting to win their awards.
Congratulations Troop 819 for having a very successful Camporee!  Our troop won awards in the signaling mirror competition, and of course who can forget the sling shot competition.  "It's Tebow Time!"  I don't think that any of us will forget the manner in which we won that competition.

Wilderness Survival Campout Meals/Fireside

This is just a reminder about our meal plan and fireside for this campout.

Dinner: Bring your own dinner (recommended meal is a tin foil dinner--you need to bring something that doesn't require you to prepare it while on the campout!)

Breakfast assignments:
Riggs: Tortillas--20-24 pack
Josh: Apples
Isaac: Cheese-- 2 lbs.
Jacob: 1 lb. Bacon
Spencer: 1 lb. Bacon

Lunch: We will not be eating while we are at the campsite, but plan to stop on the way to pick something up so bring some money to pay for your lunch.

Fireside: Theme is faith and the pioneers.
Josh is in charge
Cedric was volunteered to give the talk
Jacob volunteered to give a scripture
Think about skits that you can do.  Everyone will be involved in some way.

Come back to our blog for updates about departure time this friday.

Also, please make sure that you are working on your survival kit that you will be bringing with you to scouts on Wednesday.

To update you on our travel bug, its name has been officially changed to Captain Do-Good.  The picture associated with this bug has also been changed as voted on during our scout meeting on Wednesday.

Travel Bug Update

This is an update on the Travel Bug that we placed on our last campout.  The Bug has been moved to a new site that is south east of... Yakima, Washington!  We have also been petitioned by Mad Chad the Pirate to change the Bug's name to Captain Do-Good.  Mad Chad has also provided us with this image to go with it.  What do you think?

Flags and Camping

This is just a reminder that we have flags to deliver on Monday morning.  Please meet at Brother Ray's house at 6:30 IN YOUR SCOUT UNIFORM.  Remember that this is a scout fundraiser for troop 819, and as such we should make sure that we are representing our troop when we deliver the flags.

As for camping, please make sure that you have an anual health form filled out (part A and B) for this upcoming campout.  You do not need to see your health care provider for this form, it just simply needs to be filled out and signed by your parent/guardian.  If you do not have the form let me know and I will give you a copy.  You can also click here for the link to the online form that you can print out.  You will not be able to attend this campout without this form.

Flags and Wilderness Survival

Scouts tonight will work to accomplish two things: first we will be traveling around to collect money for our flag project.  As a reminder, this project is what funds our troop and allows to to camp and do other activities.  As we are representing our troop to the community, please make sure that you wear your uniform for this.

The second part of scouts will focus on the Wilderness Survival merit badge.

Scouting for Food

Our participation in The Scouting for Food drive starts on Wednesday, February 1st, at 6:45pm.  For those who don't know what this is, let me explain.  As scouts, we will be delivering flyer's to the homes in our neighborhoods asking them to donate food to our local food banks.  Each home in our area will receive a flyer.  On the morning of Saturday, February 4th, we will meet again to drive through our neighborhoods to collect the food that our neighbors are donating.  The food will then be delivered to our stake center.  From there the food will go to our local food banks so that it can be used to help those who are in need.  Please keep in mind that we are representing the Boy Scouts of America, and as such we need to be in our Boy Scout UNIFORMS.  By participating in this food drive we are fulfilling part of our oath, which is "to help other people at all times."  Please keep the people that we are serving in mind as we participate in this service.
